Details

Caves have long been used as a place of escape and shelter for humans and animals alike. Testimony to this fact can be found in our tour as we are hosts to caves with prehistoric Bronze Age drawings, as well as the skeletal remains of large, prehistoric cave bears. Since, for most, nature is no longer a place to live in but a place to visit, take the opportunity to take a tour of the caves as these store the treasures of both nature and history.

Day 2Speleological tour of the cave “Kuk”

After breakfast around 8:00, you will meet your expert guide and driver. You will then depart on the main road towards Sarajevo around 20 kilometers away from the hotel, where you will arrive at “Sijeračke Stijene” your starting point.
From this point forward, you’ll make your way upwards on foot. The cave “Kuk”, is found in the highest point of the “Bistrica” river canyon, so you will have to traverse some steep, wooded terrain.

The wondrous natural processes that create these spectacular underground landscapes take a very long time to do their work. In this particular case the cave dates back at least as far as the second to last Ice Age. Of this we are certain due to the finding of the remains of Ursus Spelaeus (or Cave Bear) dating back to 36-40,000 years old.

“Kuk” consists of 2 shafts which drop vertically to a depth of 70m. This natural monument abounds in beautiful formations, our goal is to see as many stalagmites, stalactites and columns as possible.

While admiring the impressive beauty of these formations, keep in mind that one centimeter of its formation requires 100 years worth of time. After coming out of the cave, on the right side of the river “Bistrica” you will make your way back to the vehicles, and back to the hotel for a late Lunch.

In the evening hours the hotel will arrange a dinner for all participants.

Day 3Speleological exploration of the caves “Velika kutlača” and “Ledenjača”

After breakfast around 8:00, you will meet your expert guide and driver. The plan for the day is to explore two caves in the near vicinity, therefore you will head out towards the village of “Budanj” about 15 kilometers away.

By this village is the cave called “Velika kutlača”. The way up toward the cave is very steep, however the beautiful view of the surroundings will quickly remove any doubt. Throughout the entire length of the cave (circa 415 meters), you will find stalactites, stalagmites and other cave formations. The abundance of these formations makes this one of the most beautiful speleological destinations in this region.

After the two hour exploration, you will head to the village of “Daničići” so that you can visit the second mountain cave in the area, which is called “Ledenjača” (or “Ice Cave”). This cave consists of one main tunnel which stretches 200 meters and many smaller offshoots which amount to 95 meters in combination. The significance of this speleo morphological site lies not only in the cave formations that are present, but also in prehistoric markings carved by the entrance, dating from the Bronze Age. The name “Ice Cave” originates from the ice present on the ceiling of the cave even into the summer months. The Ice is formed by dripping water and the unusual airflow of the cave.
Ledenice se formiraju od prokapnih voda, a usled sudara hladnog pećinskog i toplog spoljašnjeg vazduha.

You’ll head back to the hotel in time for a late lunch around 17:00, however not before stopping at “Papinov Dol”, where you can view the geographical formations called the “Sand Pyramids” which are an unusual sight and natural phenomenon. Similar formations can be found in Colorado, Italy and in Serbia.

In the evening hours the hotel will arrange a dinner for all participants.
